If you’re heading to the gym or a yoga class, don’t forget your mat — and no, we don’t mean borrowing the communal one stacked in the corner. Gym mats are hotbeds for bacteria, and they’re often far dirtier than we’d like to believe.
A 2018 study found that nearly 75% of fitness equipment — including mats — tested positive for Staphylococcus aureus, a bacteria responsible for many infections. Unlike hard surfaces like dumbbells, mats are made from soft, porous materials that soak up sweat, skin cells, and oils. Combine that with a warm, humid environment, and it’s the perfect breeding ground for bacteria, fungi, and viruses.
These germs can enter your body through tiny cuts, rug burns, or even just by touching your face — something people unconsciously do dozens of times per hour. Illnesses like pink eye, athlete’s foot, or even antibiotic-resistant infections like MRSA can all be transmitted this way.
The best defense? Bring your own mat — always. And make cleaning it a habit. After each use, wipe it down with a disinfectant or a simple homemade spray. Let it sit for a minute or two to allow the ingredients to work.
DIY Yoga Mat Cleaning Spray
- ¾ cup water
- ¼ cup white vinegar
- 5–10 drops tea tree oil (natural antimicrobial)
- Optional: 5 dropsof lavender or eucalyptus oil
Mix in a spray bottle and shake before each use. Spray generously and wipe with a clean cloth.
At home, clean your mat regularly with mild soap and water, and disinfect every 5–10 uses. You can also lay a towel over your mat during workouts and toss it in the wash after each session.
A few simple steps go a long way in keeping your workouts clean and safe.
