If you’ve recently purchased butter, stop what you’re doing and check your fridge immediately. A major recall is underway for Cabot Creamery Premium Butter, Sea Salted due to possible fecal contamination. The FDA has flagged elevated levels of coliform bacteria in the product—bacteria commonly found in human and animal waste.

Here’s what to look for:

  • Product: Cabot Creamery Premium Sea Salted Butter

  • Package Size: 8 oz (two 4-ounce sticks)

  • UPC: 0 78354 62038 0

  • Best By Date: September 9, 2025

  • Lot Numbers: 090925-055 and 2038

This butter was sold in Arkansas, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont. If you live in one of these states and have this butter in your fridge, do not eat it. Dispose of it safely or return it to the store for a refund.

Although this is a Class III recall—meaning it’s not expected to cause serious harm—the presence of fecal bacteria is a red flag. Coliform contamination can lead to diarrhea, stomach cramps, and other gastrointestinal issues. In some cases, it may even result in more severe foodborne illnesses like E. coli.

If you or anyone in your household experiences symptoms after consuming the butter, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

For questions, contact the FDA.

Check your butter now. This quick step could prevent a severe bout of food poisoning..
