What started as a lockdown trend—converting rooms into home offices or makeshift gyms—has evolved into something deeper: the wellness room. And no, it’s not just a room with a yoga mat. These spaces are now the ultimate self-care sanctuaries, designed to calm the mind, heal the body, and soothe the soul.
Designers nationwide are seeing a spike in requests for spaces dedicated to relaxation and recharge. “Think home gyms, meditation rooms, soundbathing studios, and even Zen gardens,” says Dallas-based designer Gonzalo Bueno. “People want spaces that help them unplug and reset.”
Soundbath, Sauna & Serenity—Right at Home
Want to recreate that spa-like vibe? A few yoga mats, cozy cushions, essential oils, and soft lighting can turn any corner into a calming retreat. You can even go high-tech with soundbeds or low-frequency vibration mats—perfect for a soundbath session.
Infrared saunas are also trending because they are easy to install at home and offer all the detox without the steam. Add some mood lighting, soothing sounds, or even a custom luxury shower setup, and you’ve got a mini oasis.
Cocooned in Calm
Designer Jack Ovadia created a one-person Japanese-style soaking tub with soft lights and pebble walls for a client in Arizona. His rule? “Your wellness room should make the outside world disappear.”
No Extra Room? No Problem.
Don’t have space to spare? Look for local wellness lounges offering soundbaths, saunas, and mindful mingling. “It’s the new nightclub,” says Ovadia. “Self-care is becoming social—and that’s a good thing.”
Whether it’s a full spa setup or a cozy reading nook, carving out a space to care for yourself isn’t a luxury—it’s a lifestyle.
