Superfoods Part 6: Bittersweet, Tart, and Beautifully Tasteful

Most of us have probably encountered these edible champions in some form or another. If you haven’t tried these dynamite delights, put them on the top of your shopping list! For now, read on for the skinny on two of nature’s most powerful foods.

Pomegranates

Delicious and tart, the pomegranate has been getting a lot of press lately. For those unfamiliar, the juice is found surrounding the seeds of the fruit. These seeds can be eaten whole, you can use them in salads or smoothies, essentially they can be put anywhere you would like a burst of refreshing flavor. While the fruit’s juice is very popular, like most fruits, enjoying it in its entirety garners the most benefit. Aside from the fight on free radicals, this fruit has been shown to help with heart ailments, and even erectile dysfunction.

Cacao

Probably the most covered superfood in the news today. Chocolate is the worldwide staple for a delicious indulgence, and somewhere in all that hype and popularity is a supercharged superfood. Raw cacao has a bitter, yet pleasant taste, that serves as a fantastic addition to sweet foods (like berries), beverages (coffee or tea), and even savory treats (yogurt with honey). This wonderful tropical gift has a high concentration of anti oxidants such as polyphenols, catechins and epicatechins, and even increases blood flow to the brain and enhances brain function (it is a stimulant though, so exercise moderation). Raw cacao contains vitamin C as well as essential omega 6 fatty acids. “An important thing to note is that cooked and processed chocolate contains rancid omega 6 fatty acids or trans fats which are not healthy for you.” Enjoy cocoa a number of ways, and keep it as fresh and organic as possible.
