Does Having Sex Change the Size of Your Vagina?

If you have ever been worried that having too much sex or a well-endowed partner may cause size changes to your vagina, put those fears to bed (so to speak). Turns out the vagina is a very resilient part of the body that literally “bounces back” to its pre-activity size quite efficiently.

The mysterious love canal
Vaginas are designed to be elastic and able to expand large enough for any size penis and especially childbirth. There are a number of seemingly magical changes that take place in a woman’s vagina during arousal and sexual intercourse.

During arousal, blood flow is increased to the vaginal area that provides lubrication to the rugae, the “bumpy” textured inner walls of the vagina. The rugae begin to relax, which unfolds the walls and creates space for accommodating your lover’s penis regardless of his size.

“Even the largest penis in the world won’t compare to the size of the baby, so it won’t affect the size of the vagina,” said Lauren Streicher, M.D., associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine and author of Love Sex Again.

Lubrication is very important
Sometimes a woman’s body doesn’t create enough lubrication for comfortable intercourse. This can be the result of a number of things, including hormones levels and age. It is very important to make sure you always have adequate lubrication in order to avoid irritation during sexual intercourse; therefore, you should supplement your natural lubrication when needed with a non-water-based lubricant or better yet, a natural alternative such as extra-virgin coconut oil.

In fact, using extra-virgin coconut oil can be very beneficial to women who are dealing with menopausal-induced vaginal dryness. It is an amazing moisturizer that can help reduce irritation in the vaginal area.

According to Dr. Jennifer Gunter, an OB-GYN with Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, “In my practice, many women who experience vaginal dryness, have chemical sensitivities or vulvar sensitivities report really liking it [coconut oil].”

Don’t forget your Kegels
sexRest assured, it is perfectly natural not to feel as tight-as-usual immediately after sexual intercourse because your vagina was stretched to accommodate your partner. However, it will return to its pre-intercourse tightness within a few hours.

When it comes to a woman’s “tightness” it is usually not the vagina that is the problem. It is actually the pelvic floor muscles that form a figure-eight girdle around the vaginal/pelvic area that affect tightness most of all. The Kegel exercises are very effective when frequently practiced throughout the day on a regular basis. There are also other exercises that can be done to specifically target the muscles of the pelvic floor.

“Just like working out any other muscle like your triceps, it takes time for noticeable results,” says Dr. Ava Cadell, sex therapist, and founder of LoveologyUniversity.com. “You should feel tighter in a couple of months, but keep on doing them for the rest of your life to stay sexually healthy.”

Will childbirth reduce your tightness?
What about the effects of childbirth on your vagina? While multiple childbirths can have an effect on the vaginal musculature elasticity, regular childbirth does not make a woman’s vagina permanently loosened. On average it takes around six months for a woman’s vagina to tighten up to its original size.

“Right after giving birth to an 8-pound baby, it’s natural for the vagina to stretch out, but it will go back to its normal size no matter the age of the woman,” says Dr. Cadell.
