In a study published in the October issue of the Journal of Functional Foods, researchers discovered that probiotic foods may block the absorption of intestinal fat and contribute to burning off belly fat. As a result, probiotic foods may come to be an effective tool for losing weight.
Burning Belly Fat
In the study, performed at the University of Manitoba in Canada, researchers fed two different kinds of probiotics to study participants – Lactobacillus fermentum or Lactobacillus amylovorus. Additionally, researchers provided all of the food the study subjects ate during the study.
The participants who consumed L. amylovorus had 4 percent less fat than they did at the beginning of the study. Individuals who ate foods containing L. fermentum had 3 percent less body fat. Researchers also reported that the majority of fat lost was belly fat.
How Probiotics Burn Belly Fat
Probiotics are live organisms that provide food for healthy gut bacteria. These bacteria fight off unhealthy bacteria in the system. As a result, probiotics create a supportive environment for a healthy immune system, optimal intestinal function and many other bodily systems.
Another way in which probiotics work is that they prevent fat calories from being absorbed through the intestines. Probiotics destroy bile salts, which are produced by the liver and help the intestines digest fat. By destroying bile salts, fat absorption is blocked and fat is eliminated in waste.
One of the benefits of eating probiotics is that they do not have many of the unpleasant side effects of many other fat-blocking weight loss products. For example, one frequent problem with these types of products is usually chronic diarrhea or liquified stools. Probiotics, on the other hand, support intestinal health and good bowel habits.
While eating probiotics alone may not become a singular approach for weight loss, it may become one of the recommendations doctors make to patients. Combined with physical activity and a balanced healthy diet, probiotics can be an important factor.
