A major recall is underway that could impact millions of households. Glenmark Pharmaceuticals, a major manufacturer of generic over-the-counter medications, has recalled 39 drug products—including three of the most commonly used pain relievers in the U.S.
The recalled medications include generic versions of:
- Naproxen Sodium (similar to Aleve)
- Acetaminophen (similar to Tylenol)
- Ibuprofen (similar to Advil)
According to the FDA, these medications may have been distributed through Amazon and Walmart, though it’s unclear if those are the only retailers affected.
What’s the issue? The FDA flagged these drugs due to violations of Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMP). While the exact problem wasn’t disclosed, potential risks include incorrect dosages or contamination from exposure to elements like humidity during production or transport. These drugs were manufactured in India and recalled as a Class II event, meaning they may cause temporary or reversible health effects.
Recalled Products Include:
- Naproxen Sodium, USP 550 mg, 100-count, Lot# 17231956, Exp: Aug-25
- Acetaminophen/Ibuprofen combo (250 mg/125 mg), various packet sizes, Lot#s: 17241302, 17241140, 17241141, Exp: Jul-26
What to Do:
Check your medicine cabinet. If you have any of these products, stop using them immediately. Contact your pharmacist or healthcare provider for safe disposal instructions and guidance on alternatives.
This recall serves as a crucial reminder: even trusted generics can pose a risk when quality control fails. Stay informed, and protect your household by double-checking your over-the-counter medications.
