Messy Home, Messy Mind: 5 Easy Steps to Clear The Clutter

Messy Home, Messy Mind: 5 Easy Steps to Clear The Clutter

How messy does your home get? What about your bedroom? Your office? Car? Even if you try to keep things clean, how do you feel when the clutter and mess piles up again? You probably feel overwhelmed and frustrated, maybe even a little tired, without realizing the clutter in your life is clogging up your mind. Prepare to clean house (literally) in five steps and create more clarity, energy and excitement in your life as a result.

The mess in our homes, offices or vehicles is simply a metaphor for how we’re living our lives. We can easily take on more than someone can possibly handle, move on to the next urgency, then feel overloaded and stressed because there’s too much going on. Worst of all, that leaves almost no time for our own self-care or personal time that helps us enjoy life more. Ready to shift things and have fun in the process? Let’s do this!

Step 1: Have a powerful outcome in mind.

See the vision for how you want you home/office/car to turn out. Do you want it to smell better or have a better feeling when you’re in it? For working professionals, a clean, organized (and sometimes fresh-smelling) office can contribute to more productivity, creative solutions and increased work morale. What do you want the end to look like?

Step 2: Take it one small step at a time.

You don’t have to conquer it all in five minutes. Split up the tasks and move from one space to the next. In your car, you might go through with a garbage bag to dump the trash then follow up with another bag for things that belong in your home (ie. old coffee mugs). Making the tasks simple and taking them one small step at a time will reduce overwhelm and actually help you get more done.

Step 3: Make it fun.

Listen to upbeat music or have someone join you in the process. If you make it fun, you’ll enjoy it more and probably move a little quicker.

Step 4: Reward yourself for a job well done.

Time to celebrate! Plan your reward in advance so you have something to look forward to when you’re done. Positive reinforcement will make you look forward to mundane tasks in the future. Also, create ways to ensure the clutter/mess doesn’t pile up again. The more manageable it is, the less you’ll procrastinate to get it done.

Step 5: Notice how this affects the rest of your life.

Do you feel better? Have more energy? Feel lighter overall? Realize how important it is to keep a clutter-free life if you want to feel better emotionally, mentally and physically. It makes it easier to have a productive day when you’re not surrounded by a nasty mess.

Take these five steps and you will feel absolutely wonderful. Remember, a clean home, a clean office, a clean car equals a clean mind.
