While gas stoves are often preferred by chefs for their precision and heat control, experts are increasingly sounding the alarm about the health and environmental risks they pose. About 38% of U.S. households rely on gas stoves, but mounting evidence shows these appliances release harmful pollutants into your home—even when turned off.

Natural gas combustion emits nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, benzene, and formaldehyde. Nitrogen dioxide, in particular, is a known respiratory irritant linked to asthma, especially in children.

The World Health Organization has lowered its recommended nitrogen dioxide exposure levels by 75%, citing growing concerns. Studies have also shown that homes with gas stoves have significantly higher levels of carbon monoxide, even when the appliance is working correctly. And benzene—a carcinogen found in secondhand smoke—has been found to leak from gas stoves even when they’re not in use.

Beyond personal health, gas stoves also impact the environment. Methane, the main component of natural gas, is a greenhouse gas over 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Small leaks from stoves and the gas infrastructure contribute to climate change even when the stove isn’t on.

If replacing your gas stove with an electric or induction model isn’t feasible, you can still reduce your exposure. Use a properly vented hood fan every time you cook, or at the very least, open a window to improve airflow.

Air purifiers designed to filter out particulate matter can also help, and using electric alternatives like microwaves or air fryers can minimize gas usage altogether.

While gas stoves are convenient, they come with risks. Fortunately, with the right strategies, you can protect your indoor air—and your health.
