Do you want to increase your sex drive, and improve performance and pleasure? The solution to sexual performance issues often comes in the form a little blue pill, but there are many exceptional alternative ways to boost libido without pills or magic potions. The answer may simply be meditation.
Research suggests that most couples fall short in the bedroom due to stress and lack of energy. Being tired and worn out from the day is one contributing factor to a decreased libido, according to Emily Fletcher, the founder of Ziva Meditation Center in New York City. “For one in four cohabitating adult couples in the U.S., the reason is they’re too tired,” Fletcher told Fox Health.
In October of this year, Fletcher discussed the value of meditation for boosting sex drive at the 2015 Bulletproof Biohacking Conference in Pasadena, California. She attributed much of people’s decreased libido to the natural fight-or-flight response that is activated when we are stressed.
Fletcher noted that increased levels of adrenaline and cortisol, which are released during the stress response, cause the decrease in libido. “We’re dumping cortisol and adrenaline in the body, and then we wonder why we can’t get in the mood for sex,” Fletcher said.
Practising meditation in the morning can reduce stress and the subsequent fight-or-flight response. This will assist in balancing hormone levels and improving sleep, while decreasing fatigue, anxiety and depression caused by stress, according to a study published in Psychiatry Research (2011).
Sara Lazar, a neuroscientist at Harvard Medical School and co-author of the study told The Washington Post in an interview, “The amygdala, the fight or flight part of the brain which is important for anxiety, fear and stress in general. That area got smaller in the group that went through the mindfulness-based stress reduction program,” Lazar continued, “The change in the amygdala was also correlated to a reduction in stress levels.”
Meditation offers a wealth of benefits for health and happiness. Combatting stress, improving sleep, and balancing your body’s adrenaline and cortisol levels are steps on the path to boosting your libido.
Diet also plays a vital role in your sex drive. Fruits like blackberries, raspberries, watermelon and figs are wonderful libido boosters. Try adding them to your morning smoothie, after practising 10 minutes of stress-reducing meditation. A healthy dose of nutritious greens, like broccoli, has also been found to improve female libido.
There are plenty of alternatives to the little blue pill. You may find that meditation and a nutritious diet are surprisingly effective when it comes to enhancing those intimate moments that every relationship needs.
