Weight loss competitions have joined the reality show craze on television. However, researchers from Brown University and Miriam Hospital’s Weight Control and Diabetes Program have found weight loss programs that involve working together as a group are beneficial for all participants.
Weight Loss with Peers
For people struggling with weight loss, it can be easier to remain committed to their goal if they are working with other people. This may explain the success of workplace weight loss competitions or why couples who work out together are more successful losing weight. Past research has found that very often, people who spend time with others who are overweight begin to struggle with their own weight issues. This may be due to social activities that include eating food and sedentary socializing.
Curious about whether the reverse is true, researchers studied groups who are trying to lose weight together. Examining more than 3,000 participants, they found that group weight loss programs provided accountability, competition and reinforced weight loss goals for program participants. According to Tricia Leahey, study author, “being surrounded by others with similar health goals all working to achieve the same thing may have really helped people with their weight loss efforts.”
From a psychological perspective, participating in group weight loss programs reinforces group thinking and acceptance of healthy eating and physical activity behaviors. Peer pressure may also contribute to adherence to diet guidelines and participation in monitoring personal physical activities.
As demonstrated in the video above, working out together with a friend can be especially helpful and can keep physical activity fun and enjoyable. Your friend may help you stay motivated to continue going to the gym or biking or walking every day when it would be easier to simply stop if there is nobody to keep pushing you.
Do you enjoy physical activities with others? What are your favorite things to do?
