The FDA has issued a recall for several benzoyl peroxide skincare products after tests revealed elevated levels of benzene, a known carcinogen. Brands such as La Roche-Posay, Walgreens, and Proactiv are among those affected. The recall follows a March 2024 study by Valisure, which found that benzoyl peroxide can degrade into benzene under high temperatures. Long-term exposure to benzene has been linked to blood cancers and other health risks.

Although the FDA confirms that most benzoyl peroxide products remain safe, the recall applies to specific batches found to have unsafe benzene levels.

What Should Consumers Do?

  1. Check Your Skincare Products – Verify if you own any of the recalled items and discontinue use immediately. Manufacturers may provide refund or disposal instructions.
  2. Store Products Properly – Keep benzoyl peroxide treatments in a cool, dark place, and avoid using them past their expiration dates.
  3. Explore Safer Alternatives – Consider benzoyl peroxide-free acne treatments, such as those formulated with natural ingredients like salicylic acid, sulfur, or tea tree oil.
  4. Research Clean Beauty Options – Consumers can check the Environmental Working Group (EWG) database to identify clean, non-toxic skincare brands that meet high safety standards.

While benzoyl peroxide remains an FDA-approved acne treatment, proper storage and choosing products with rigorous safety testing are key to minimizing health risks.
