What do you need to hit over 100 million views on social media — a mom in a Chewbacca mask apparently. When Candace Payne put on her signature Chewbacca mask last Thursday, who would have thought that her video would have gone viral with over 100 million hits? Her giggle is infectious and you can’t help but laugh too.
Thirty-seven-year-old mother of two, Candace Payne is one happy woman. She has a Chewbacca mask, and video that’s gone viral with over a 100 million views — and it’s going up and up! Last Thursday Payne decided to share with her friends the recent purchase she made at a Kohl’s. Payne said she went to the store to make a couple of returns, but found the mask and couldn’t resist buying it.
“I’m really excited to share with you something I got,” Payne says in her video. The mask, originally bought for her son, has now turned into her own toy. “I’ll let my kids play with it…” Payne says sheepishly. “I’m not a bad mom… I’m not a jerk.” She says, “But after that it goes back in my room. “
When Payne puts on the mask and opens her mouth, the mask lets out the Chewbacca yell, making Payne giggle with excitement. “I’m such a happy Chewbacca. This is worth every penny.” Payne says in her video.“ Really, the entire video is about Payne laughing at herself and the mask. But as you watch her you can’t help but laugh too.
May the force be with — social media
Social Media is a powerful force to be reckoned with. Because of Payne’s social media video, the electronic Chewbacca mask has sold out from several major toy chains.
“We have received an overwhelming amount of interest in the Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens Chewbacca Electronic Mask by Hasbro since Candace posted her funny and lighthearted video,” said a Kohl’s spokeswoman to CNBC.
Payne is infectious; she giggles and laughs her way through the video. So, you can’t help but feel her excitement for the mask. Is it worth it to Payne — seems so. Is it worth clicking on her video? It’s good for a laugh. Is it good for Hasbro sales? oh ya! Maybe Candace Payne should receive a token of appreciation from Hasbro. She’s definitely their queen of viral video — a real social media dream.
