4 Reasons Your Skin is Prematurely Old

Skin is the largest organ in the body. It works hard, 24-7 to keep you healthy, and you need to return that favor by keeping it healthy. Skin acts as the first line of defense against foreign invaders. It regulates temperature and fights off infections. The intricate channels of nerves in our skin allow us to feel things such as touch. The skin is extremely complex and contains oil glands, hair follicles, sweat glands, blood vessels and nerves.

Where it Starts

Contrary to what some may think, caring for skin starts on the inside. You can smother your skin with all kinds of great smelling creams and lotions, but they will do no good unless you are eating a healthy, varied diet. Getting plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables,  healthy fat, and protein will ensure that skin cells are pumped and ready for action. Hydration is paramount. Drink at least 8 glasses of water daily, more if you exercise. Skin requires plenty of water, like all of our organs, in order to function efficiently.

Smoking and Alcohol

Research has found a strong link between smoking and rapid aging of the skin. Smoking causes the skin to become leathery and increases wrinkles which makes many people look old beyond their years. Smoking reduces the elasticity in the skin and breaks down collagen while reducing the skin’s oxygen supply. Alcohol consumption causes the skin to become dehydrated and old looking. If you do drink alcohol, be sure to drink plenty of water between drinks.

Cleanliness

The skin requires washing but only with a mild, natural product. Many cosmetics and special face care creams contain harsh chemicals that strip away natural oils leaving skin dry and thirsty. If your skin is dry do not use alcohol-based products, and if it is oily do not choose oil-based products. It is best to use a water-based product instead. Wear organic makeup only and be sure to wash it off before bed.

4 Reasons Your Skin is Prematurely OldSleep and Stress

Late nights will destroy your skin. When you are sleep deprived it shows in your skin. The skin needs you to sleep so that cells can repair and restore. Without adequate sleep, your skin will just be tired-looking all the time. If you have a lot of stress in your life consider taking up a healthy habit like walking or swimming. Exercise does wonders for stress relief and your skin will take on a whole new radiance.
