According to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada Irritable Bowel Disorder (IBD) is a debilitating illness that many people are now diagnosed with in their late teens and 20s. However, it is often difficult to diagnose and stress can be a significant factor many people.
IBD Symptoms
IBD is an inflammatory condition that affects the intestinal system. Crohn’s can affect any part of the intestinal system from the mouth to the anus. Colitis, on the other hand, primarily affects the large intestine. Both conditions have symptoms of abdominal pain and cramping, constipation, diarrhea and general discomfort.
It is extremely important to maintain healthy intestinal bacteria, however, many individuals with IBD have difficulty doing so despite consuming probiotic foods. While they are experiencing a flare, their iron levels increase and many probiotic bacteria do not thrive with high iron levels.
Although there is no cure for IBD it is possible to treat it and it can go into remission. Patients are advised to reduce stress in their life and eat a diet that includes probiotic foods. Researchers at the University of Bristol School of Veterinary Medicine published a study outlining the development of probiotics that promote remission of IBD. These probiotics grow while high levels of iron are present, as they are during an active flare of IBD. Additionally, they reduce inflammation levels present in IBD patients.
IBD is an uncomfortable and distressing health condition for many people. During active flares, it can be difficult to maintain normal activities and many patients feel lethargic and uncomfortable. With new developments in probiotic bacteria available, individuals with IBD may be able to obtain effective treatment more easily.
