Top Family Dogs

Choosing the right dog for your family is a big decision. There are so many aspects to take into consideration. Size, temperament, whether they are barkers, hunters or lovers…. the list goes on.

To make your research a bit easier, we’ve compiled the following list of – in our opinion – the top ten best dogs to consider welcoming into your life.

Golden retriever

The golden retriever is one of the most beloved dogs. They have a love for the water and a desire to retrieve. Goldens need plenty of exercise, and, as you can guess, love to play fetch.

They are slow to mature, so they remain puppy-like until the age of 3 or 4. They are smart, devoted dogs who love to please.

Border terrier

Border terriers are relatively small dogs only weighing an average of 11 pounds. They are best suited for active families, because these pooches need plenty of exercise. Border terriers have a powerful drive to hunt, so they will need a fence to keep them in the yard.

If left alone long enough, these critters will escape. They are fox hunters and love to dig. With all of that being said, this breed thrives with love and companionship.

Labrador retriever

Labrador retrievers, often simply called labs, are smart, dedicated, hard-working dogs. Because of their good nature, they make excellent therapy dogs, helping out in nursing homes and hospitals. They come in three colors, yellow, chocolate and black.

If you’re looking for a watch dog, the lab will not be your dog of choice. They are so good natured and sweet that they will gladly let any intruder into your home, and maybe even greet them with a kiss.

Welsh corgi

The Welsh corgi is a herding dog. They are a very intelligent breed and they are easy to train, although they are known to be a bit stubborn. Since the corgi is a herding dog, they may try herding the family! They have a lot of energy and need to exercise.

All in all this breed makes for a great family pet. The corgi is loyal, loving and even tempered.

Beagle

A beagle is best for a family with rambunctious children. This breed is very energetic and vocal. They will need a fenced in yard: if this doggie smells a rabbit, he will take off after it and there will be no stopping him.

The beagle was bred for hunting and can be traced back to ancient Roman times.

Dachshund

This short-legged, long-bodied hound is lively, friendly and has a keen sense of smell. They may be the smallest of the hounds, but they are tough enough to take on a badger, which was what they were bred to do.This breed comes in three different coats, long hair, wired hair and short hair. They can also be miniature or standard-sized.

Dachshunds are lovable companions and are great for a family with children. We do have one word of caution: these hot dogs love to bark.

Bulldog

The bulldog is a docile, friendly, lovable dog. This breed is very dependable and will protect your family. The more love you show to them, the happier they’ll be.

Pug

Pugs are even tempered and have playful personalities. These little pooches were bred to be lap dogs, and they thrive on human companionship. Pugs actually become heartsick if they are ignored.

Newfoundland

Despite their size, Newfoundlands have sweet dispositions. Because of their size, Newfoundlands need a lot of space and tons of love. They do not do well on their own. They are avid swimmers and prefer cooler climates. It seems the only problem with this lovable bear is that they are messy. They track dirt in with their fur, and drool and slobber everywhere.

If you’re willing to put up with that, the Newfoundland is one of the sweetest and most loyal breeds.

Collie

Collies are very sensitive and intelligent dogs. They are protective of their families, somehow sensing where there is trouble. Collies are usually quiet dogs, barking little. Just don’t leave them alone for too long – they will bark incessantly.

Remember to do your research on the characteristics you would like in your dog. Also, remember that having a pet is a huge responsibility. They are not something you can return if you’ve grown tired of them, or if they’ve chewed your favorite pair of shoes.

Dogs are wonderful, faithful companions that will stick with you through thick and thin, so make sure that when you choose one, you’re ready for the long-term commitment.
