Berries are once again in the spotlight for their health-promoting properties. You probably already know that these sweet and colorful fruits are packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory components that reduce the risk of number of chronic diseases. The positive influence that berries have on health is well documented.
Now, a study from the Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University and the University of Maryland has shown that berries could also play an essential role in clearing the accumulation of toxic proteins in the brain.
Why is this important? Most diseases of the brain, including Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s, increase levels of toxic proteins in the brain. The research shows that berries promote autophagy which is the brain’s natural housekeeping mechanism, resulting in a reduction of toxic accumulation.
While this study was performed on rats, the researchers are currently conducting a study on older people. The lead investigator, Dr. Barbara Shukitt-Hale, noted, “We have a lot of animal work that suggests these compounds will protect the aged brain and reverse some behavioral deficits.”
Most of us hope for a long life, but more importantly, a lengthy, high quality life, which means avoiding diseases that have often been thought of as a normal part of the aging process.
