A short video posted online this month by the Toronto Star examined just how much sugar is in Starbucks’ famous Frappuccino beverages. The results were staggering.
The Star examined three flavors of Frappuccino, all in the “tall” size. The Light Vanilla Frappuccino was found to contain 41 grams of sugar, which translates to 10 teaspoons. The Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino contained 69 grams, or 17 teaspoons. The Caramel Ribbon Crunch Frappuccino was the worst offender, with 93 grams, or 23 teaspoons, of sugar.
When asked the difference between a food and a poison in 1957, Dr. William Coda Martin answered, “medically: any substance applied to the body, ingested or developed within the body, which causes or may cause disease. Physically: any substance which inhibits the activity of a catalyst which is a minor substance, chemical or enzyme that activates a reaction.”
While the American Heart Association gives an allowance of 16 teaspoons of sugar per day, and many dieticians recommend a lower number of about 10, the body simply does not need refined, white sugar, in any amount. Refined sugar, according to Dr. Martin’s definition, is poison.
Additionally, refined sugar drains the body of its stored vitamins and minerals, through the digestive, detoxification and elimination processes needed to process it. It also makes the body acidic, and leads to a crash, making us sleepy, irritable, and memory-impaired. Refined sugar is also a key factor in the rise of obesity and type 2 diabetes.
Whatever you do, avoid the Frappuccinos; 93 grams of sugar is just ludicrous. Delicious organic coffee is very easy to make at home, and you can add your own coconut crystals or stevia leaf to desired sweetness, without the undesirable toxic effects of refined sugar.
