There are many natural treatments that are touted for people who have type 2 diabetes. While many are effective, cinnamon may be one of the best and easiest ways to naturally reduce blood sugar levels.
Cinnamon is a spice that almost everyone has in their spice cabinet. Many of us love sprinkling it in hot chocolate, adding it to cookies and putting it on our toast. However, it only takes a quarter teaspoon daily to lower your blood sugar.
According to WebMD, using this small amount of cinnamon can lower your blood sugar by 24 percent. Additionally, adding it to your diet can also reduce cholesterol levels by 18 percent.
A Little Caution
If you have liver damage, you should be cautious about eating large amounts of cinnamon. It is also important to remember that like many herbal remedies, cinnamon can interact with many medications and other herbal supplements. Some of the herbal remedies that can interact with cinnamon include psyllium, Siberian ginseng, horse chestnut, garlic, panax, bitter melon, chromium and devil’s claw.
If you decide you want to add cinnamon to help lower your blood sugar levels, make sure you keep a close watch on change in your blood sugar to avoid letting your levels far too low. Also, it is important to inform your doctor so that any medications you are prescribed can be adjusted if necessary.
