Are Your Mercury Fillings Causing Candida?

Have you noticed a white coating on your tongue which does not seem to go away no matter how much you brush? Does your breath smell funky, your digestion feel off, and you’re experiencing a nasty brain fog you can’t seem to shake?

If so, the culprit may be candida. Candida is a form of yeast which lives naturally in the body, and is actually beneficial in small amounts. When it overgrows, however, it can break down intestinal walls and release toxins into the bloodstream, leading to a number of health conditions. It can be difficult to notice – as the above symptoms are just a sampling of dozens.

Candida overgrowth can be caused by a large variety of factors. However, if you have silver fillings, also known as amalgam fillings, these may be the first suspects in your body’s candida reaction.

This is because amalgam fillings contain mercury. According to leading health expert, Dr. Joseph Mercola, each amalgam filling may contain up to 1,000 milligrams of mercury, which may be slowly released when you chew, and can potentially accumulate in the body. Mercury is a neurotoxin, and is linked to immune, nervous and endocrine system disruption. It is also linked to lower IQ in children.

As to the connection between mercury and candida, popular health writer, Gill Jacobs, writes, “The National Candida Society has many members who attribute at least part of their recovery to mercury removal, as many practitioners are coming to realize the pivotal role that heavy metals play in candida overgrowth.”

One reason for this may be that mercury is pro-inflammatory, and leads to oxidative stress in the body. According to Jacobs, it also destroys the enzyme in the body which is responsible for the conversion of the omega-3 fatty acid, EPA. This enzyme is key for oxygen delivery in the cell, thereby creating conditions where candida can more easily flourish if this enzyme is reduced.

Whether you have candida or not, it is worthwhile to seriously consider having amalgam fillings removed from your teeth, as accumulating mercury can lead to a wide variety of other health conditions, as well. Do your research and seek out a holistic dentist who is trained in removing these fillings safely, and replacing them with non-mercury versions. You may wish to talk to a few different dentists before making your decision.

It is a wise idea to talk to a natural health professional before you begin, to learn how to safely detox your body of both candida and heavy metals.
