Lavender sachets make a wonderful gift because they can be used for so many things, whether slipped into a drawer to freshen it up or placed under your pillow at night for better sleep. Add a ribbon and hang them in your closet over a hanger to give your space a fresh new scent. You can even place them in a pair of old smelly shoes for some much-needed help. The possibilities are endless!
If you’ve always wanted to make some sachets, now is your chance. They are so easy and fast to whip up, you’ll be amazed.
Ingredients
- Lavender flower buds (they can be bought on Amazon.com)
Equipment
- Any scrap of material (I use muslin for the bottoms and flannel for the tops)
- Cardstock (or 4×6-inch index cards) for pattern
- Pinking shears
- Scissors
- Sewing machine
- Funnel
- Iron
Instructions
1. Decide what shapes you are going to use. I chose a 3.5-inch circle, an elongated heart (4.5 inches long by 2-inches wide) and a 3.25-inch square.
2. Choose your fabric — any fabric will do. Tip: Iron the fabric to make sure it lays flat, which makes sewing the sachets much easier.
3. Cut out all the pieces needed for each pattern.
4. Make sure to pin each piece to keep the material straight for sewing.
5. Carefully sew each edge, starting about 3/4 of the way down one side of the fabric, using a 1/4-inch seam. Continue sewing until you have about an inch left open from your last stitch. This space will be where you insert your funnel and fill with lavender.
6. Now that you have all the pieces together, start stuffing them with lavender. Place the funnel in the space left open. For the square and circle, you will only need one tablespoon of lavender buds. The hearts are smaller and only need two teaspoons of buds. Tip: Use the end of the scissors to push lavender down into the sachets.
7. Sew up the little spaces left open.
8. Backstitch the sachet to lock the stitches and cut off all the strings.
9. Using the pinking shears, pink all edges of your sachets.
