Holiday Travel: 5 Ways to Combat Motion Sickness

Riding roller coasters, taking long car rides and sailing the seas can all lead to motion sickness. You do not want to miss out on all of the fun activities, so you need to get your motion sickness under control. There are many natural ways that allow you to keep motion sickness under control and you can quickly use these to both relieve and prevent feeling sick.

Focus Your Eyes

When you are looking at things whizzing past, you will find that nausea can come on quite quickly. Focus your eyes on the horizon, the road directly in front of you or on a distant stationary object. Keep facing forward and keep your body still. This ensures that your inner ear and brain are in sync to prevent motion sickness.

Take Deep Breaths

You can alleviate some of the dizziness and stomach upset associated with motion sickness by taking some deep breaths. Close your eyes and breathe in slowly, focusing on the expansion of your diaphragm. Exhale over the course of about 10 seconds and imagine the dizziness and nausea leaving your body. You can do this any time you feel motion sickness starting – knocking it out before it gets too bad.

Have a Snack

Before you travel, you want to enjoy a light meal to help calm your stomach. This is especially important for children who tend to experience motion sickness more readily when they travel on an empty stomach. Stick with something bland like a banana or applesauce. Drink water or a weak, caffeine-free tea to go with your snack. Avoid dairy, sweets, heavy foods and greasy foods. Keep the snack light and avoid a full meal before travel.

Get Some Air

When you start to feel queasy, crack a window and allow the air to blow onto your face. A cool breeze can alleviate dizziness and nausea. If it is very cold or hot outside, use some cool air from the vents in the car. You can adjust the temperature that comes out of the vents so that it is not too hot or too cold.

Use Acupressure

Acupressure is a traditional technique for motion sickness that can relieve it almost immediately. Follow these steps to perform it:

  1. Place your thumb on the area of your inner forearm that is about two inches above your wrist. You will feel two tendons and you want to go between these.
  2. Gently apply pressure to this area and use a circular motion to massage it.
  3. Massage this area for approximately five minutes to alleviate your symptoms.

Just make sure to use all of these natural remedies properly to ensure optimal results. You can use these throughout the day to reign in your nausea and to ensure you feel your best. Since these are all-natural and do not include any herbs or medications, you can combine as many as you want without the risk of ill effects.
