Even at high normal levels, increased blood sugar contributes to problems with memory and thinking ability. These were the findings of a study that is being published in Neurology, the professional journal published by the American Academy of Neurology.
Researchers from the National University of Canberra found that individuals who have high levels of blood sugar are at greater risk of developing brain shrinkage in the areas of the brain associated with memory and thinking ability. The hippocampus and amygdala are the areas of the brain most affected by high blood sugar, even for individuals who have not been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
Compromised ability to think or retain short and long term memories are associated with dementia, particularly with Alzheimer’s disease. As scientists gain a better understanding of how memories are lost, the impact of diet has become clearer. Individuals who eat a diet containing large amounts of high fructose corn syrup and other processed foods are potentially placing themselves at greater risk for developing these devastating and debilitating health conditions.
Prevention Measures
There are many ways to prevent Alzheimer’s and type 2 diabetes. One of the best approaches is to improve your diet. Eating whole foods, such as organic fruits and vegetables can reduce blood sugar levels and increase antioxidants which help fight off aging and cancer. Additionally, eating low glycemic whole grain foods rather than processed foods can decrease blood sugar levels. Avoiding chemical sweeteners, such as aspartame and saccharin can also improve your health. These chemicals have been associated with contributing to developing type 2 diabetes and have also been associated with other detrimental health conditions.
Regular exercise is also important. Exercise does not have to be strenuous to be effective. Walking daily, riding a bike or simply doing yoga stretches can be an effective way to increase metabolism, improve muscle strength and improve your stamina.
By paying attention to your diet, avoiding processed foods and adding exercise to your daily routine, you can lower your blood sugar. Not only will you feel better, but you may be able to think more clearly and retain your memories!
