Prostate cancer is one of the leading illnesses in men. Although this form of cancer can be treated if it is detected early, preventing the cancer from developing in the first place is a better option. In a study recently published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers discovered that diet has a substantial impact on development of this cancer in men.
Choline is found in many foods, including eggs, meat and milk products. Researchers at Harvard Medical School found that men who ate diets with high amounts of these foods had a 70 percent increased chance of developing lethal metastatic prostate cancer when compared to men who consumed substantially lower amounts of food with high choline levels. Researchers did not discover a link between developing advanced prostate cancer when dietary consumption of choline changed after diagnosis of non-metastatic cancer.
Choline is an essential nutrient that is important for human muscle development. Some studies have suggested that the amino acid methionine, which is present in meat and dairy products may also be a contributing factor in the development of prostate cancer. Methionine has been associated with the growth of cancer cells.
Alternative Options
The Harvard study suggests that eating small amounts of dairy, eggs and meat products does not raise the risk of developing prostate cancer. Researchers found study participants who ate small amounts of these foods had significantly lower levels of choline. Additionally, since methionine is present in these same foods, levels of this amino acid are also lower. It appears that in small amounts, these foods are safe for men.
Eating a diet that largely consists of whole organic fruits and vegetables and whole grain products may be a better option when it comes to prostate and overall health. Lean proteins, such as those found in organic poultry, wild seafood and fish are also better choices for overall health. Limiting the amount of processed foods, particularly those containing high fructose corn syrup and preservatives can also lead to better health outcomes.
