Five Perfect Foods That Help You Age Well

Aging is inevitable but aging well is a choice. The body responds to aging in many ways, some that we don’t always like. Our muscles seem to get sorer quickly, we may have less flexibility, reduced energy, diminished sex drive and a host of other so-called age-related symptoms.

The truth is it does not have to be all bad, or bad at all. Aging gracefully while protecting the body from disease is possible if we provide the right fuel. Here are five power foods that not only keep you looking and feeling your best but will also slow down the aging process.

Spinach
Popeye really knew what he was doing when he ate his spinach. Research suggests that spinach leads the way in the defense against osteoporosis and bone density loss. Leafy greens are a huge source of calcium and just once cup of fresh spinach daily provides one and a half times the daily requirement. If you are not a big fan of salads, incorporate spinach into smoothies for a tasty green treat!

Curry Powder
Places in India where curry powder is eaten daily experience one-fourth the amount of Alzheimer’s that we do in America. The main mental power booster in curry powder comes from turmeric, a spice that is rich in the antioxidant curcumin. Curcumin keeps cognitive function sharp and improves memory by keep sticky proteins that are toxic away from the brain. Try some curry on rice, bean dishes, chicken or even in soups.

Dark Chocolate
A few squares of organic very dark chocolate each day helps keep heart attack and stroke risk down. Chocolate actually reduces blood pressure. Cocoa contains plant chemicals known as flavonols that encourage blood vessels to relax, taking years off of our circulatory system. Be sure to enjoy dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa.

Eggs
Free range, organic eggs not only help the body to build muscle but also reduce fat. Eggs contain nine different vitamins, eight minerals, two amino acids and a ton of macronutrients. The amino acid leucine decreases lean tissue loss and encourages fat loss. Eating two eggs, loaded with protein, a day is a great way to fire up your metabolism.

Berries
Berries are not only beautiful to look at, taste great but are also rich in antioxidant compounds, which slow the growth of cancer, improve muscle tone and enhance brain function. Fresh or frozen berries make a lovely dessert, cereal topping or part of a nutritionally rich morning smoothie.
