One of the most difficult aspects of staying healthy and maintaining energy levels is planning ahead for trips. Whether you are traveling with your family, commuting to work or simply on-the-go for every day errands, it can be tricky to make healthy decisions. There are a few simple ways you can stay energized and healthy even when you’re not at home.
The best plan of attack when wanting to maintain high energy levels while traveling is to plan ahead. Most likely, you know how you will be traveling (car, bus, plane, etc…) and where you are going. Just as you would pack a suitcase or briefcase with what you need for your trip, the same goes for planning meals and drinks. If you are traveling on the road, pack a cooler full of healthy treats, plenty of water and an ice pack to keep everything fresh. Pack more than you would expect to eat or drink. If you are traveling by plane, keep snacks in your bag or purse to carry on with you.
Once you have planned ahead and decided to pack food and water, be sure to eat before leaving. Having a healthy breakfast with enough protein and carbohydrates will help fuel your day. It’s easy to skip this first meal, especially when you’re trying to get out of the house. Don’t skip it. Breakfast is the best way to catapult metabolism and energy levels first thing in the morning. If you’re not a breakfast eater, have a piece of toast with almond butter or a handful of raw almonds. Drink plenty of water before leaving your home.
Plan on packing enough healthy snacks such as healthy bars, trail mix and fruit like bananas and apples, so you are able to eat something every few hours. This will help maintain energy levels and keep your moods stable (we all know what it’s like to feel tired and cranky while traveling!). It’s okay to have caffeine in the morning with your breakfast, but drinking coffee or caffeine-induced energy drinks all day long will cause burn out. You will eventually crash, and that doesn’t make for an exciting trip. Drinking plenty of water – even when you don’t feel thirsty – is the best way to stay alert and feel good.
Plan your meals, snacks and drinks for your trip just as you would a suitcase full of clothing. When you know what you will be eating and drinking, it’s much easier to stay healthy and feel fully energized while traveling. Your trip, vacation or daily errands will be much more productive and exciting when you’re well fed and hydrated. Start applying these tips and watch your energy levels soar the next time you are on-the-go!
