It doesn’t matter if you know the person or if it’s your first time meeting: first dates can be nerve-racking and awkward. Here is a list of things not to do, and things to look out for.
Focus: Do not check out another person. No matter where your first date may be, keep your focus on the person you’re with.
Pet Names: Hold off on the pet names, like “babe,” “hun,” or “snookums.” They will develop soon enough in a relationship. Don’t scare off your date by using them too prematurely.
Phone: Keep your phone in your pocket, or handbag. You do not want your date to think that the person you’re texting is more interesting than they are. Plus, it’s just plain rude.
Talk of Ex: Do not bring up your ex. No one wants to hear about or be compared to a past relationship.
Manners: Remember your manners. If you’re out to dinner, chew with your mouth closed and use a napkin. “Please,” “thank you,” and “excuse me” are a few terms your mother has taught you… use them!
Know-it-All: Don’t correct your date. By acting like a know-it-all or correcting their grammar, you are putting a damper on your conversation. Keep the talk light and fun.
Confidence: Don’t be too confident or arrogant. This is just a cover-up for insecurity. Be confident in who you are, but not to the point of making you seem childish and uncomfortable with yourself.
Cleanliness: Be sure to look your best. The first impression is everything. Make sure your hair is in place, your teeth are brushed and your clothes are nice, meaning clean with no holes.
Desperation: This is a first date… not necessarily “the one.” You just met (or have just started dating) this person. You don’t want to appear to be desperate.
Questions: Do not interrogate your date. While it’s good to ask questions and seem interested, don’t go overboard!
Talking: Stop talking. Let your date get a word in every once in a while. Show them you’re interested in what they are saying.
A first date is just one small step in the journey toward a relationship. Seeing it this way takes some of the pressure off everyone, and makes it possible to enjoy the date.
Don’t try too hard to impress, because you won’t be able to maintain that level of behavior. Simply treat your date in the same manner you’d like to be treated.
Relax and enjoy your first date. It’s supposed to be fun!
