Make Your Own Toxin-Free Deodorant

Did you know that your skin is the largest organ in your body? This important organ also absorbs most things that you put on it, therefore, you should be extremely careful about what comes into contact with your skin.

The Environmental Working Group says consumers may be unaware of the dangerous chemicals lurking in their go-to products. This is true of makeup, shampoos, creams and even deodorant.

Deodorant is something most people use on a daily basis, so a safe product is critical. However, there are several toxic ingredients found in conventional deodorant, including aluminum. It has been shown to be harmful to our health in many ways; research found that it may contribute to serious medical conditions including seizures, breast cancer, Alzheimer’s, bone formation disorders and kidney problems

How to stay safe

Although there are several good chemical-free products to choose from, they can be expensive. The good news is that you can make your own deodorant at home without breaking the bank, and even enjoy the creative process too.

Here is an easy and safe recipe that I make often. It is entirely natural and chemical free — giving you peace of mind.

DIY Easy and Safe Deodorant

Ingredients

Myrrh and melaleuca have antimicrobial and antifungal properties, and lavender is well-suited for tackling the bacteria that causes body odor. If you have a favorite oil, be sure to include a few drops in this recipe. I like to add a little lemon or orange once in awhile to change things up a bit.

Equipment

Instructions

1. Measure out coconut oil and shea butter into a small glass bowl, and slowly warm them up in the microwave. I use ten seconds at a time.

2. Stir well to make sure the oils are mixed. Now add baking soda and arrowroot powder, and carefully stir until smooth. Add the essential oils and stir again.

3. Carefully pour the mix into a jar and put the lid on it. The deodorant can be stored right in your bathroom for your convenience.

4. Use a soft cloth or your fingertips to apply as often as needed.

This recipe will stay soft — or even liquefy — if your bathroom is warm. If you prefer your deodorant to be solid, put it in the refrigerator for 20 minutes before using.

I find it very satisfying to spend time making personal care products for myself, my friends and family. They make great gifts for health conscious people; it’s a truly unique way to say, “I care about you.” Put your deodorant in cute jars with creative tags and viola! You have awesome presents for all your friends and family.
