Celebrity Weight Loss: Not a Model Diet

Many Americans struggle with their weight. However, celebrity weight loss is often glamorized, even though their weight loss methods are frequently unhealthy and can even cause permanent health problems. While actors may see gaining or losing large amounts of weight within a matter of a few weeks or months is great for their career and acting range, the damage they cause to their body in the process may be something they come to regret.

Matthew McConaughey lost 30 lbs. quickly for an upcoming movie role.

Losing weight or even gaining weight, when it is done correctly does not need to be an unhealthy prospect. In fact, for many people, adjusting their weight can be a good way to improve blood sugar, muscle strength and improve heart health.

One of the most common ways people who want to lose a great deal of weight adjust their diet is by restricting caloric intake – in other words, they starve themselves. However, your body needs nutrients in order to work properly. By restricting calories, especially carbohydrates and protein, the body kicks into starvation mode. Instead of burning off unwanted fat, it begins to burn muscle, including vital heart muscle. Fat is retained because the body can use fat slowly as a reserve for energy. Bones can also become brittle with restriction of calcium-rich foods, such as milk, cheese and other foods.

The process of starving yourself to lose weight also alters metabolism substantially. Many people discover that when they lose weight this way, they gain weight more easily afterward and have an even harder time losing the new weight. Extended or repeated periods of caloric restriction adjust metabolism to slow even further, making it more and more difficult to lose weight.

Long term problems with unhealthy weight loss include heart problems, intestinal difficulty – especially if laxatives have been used extensively for weight loss, and osteoporosis, just to name a few.

Healthier Alternatives

If you want to lose or gain weight, it is important to maintain a healthy level of nutrition and physical activity. Simply eliminating processed foods and soda can result in weight loss. Replace these foods with whole foods, such as fruits and vegetables. Eat lean meats, such as chicken and fish, and drink lots of water.

By eating a nutritious diet and exercising daily, you will begin to see healthy weight loss that can be maintained. If you have health issues, be sure to consult your doctor before making dramatic changes to your diet or embarking on a physical fitness program.
