If you have a throbbing headache, sex may be the last thing you want to think out. However, according to a recent study, sexual activity during a migraine or cluster headache may actually bring relief.
Headache experts at the University of Muenster in Germany believe that a rush of endorphins brought about by sex may act like a natural painkiller for some migraine sufferers. These are the same endorphins that are released when some people exercise or eat chocolate.
To test their theory, researchers collected data from 800 patients who suffered from migraines and 200 who suffered from what is known as cluster headaches. The questionnaire gained information about the participants sexual activity during headache attacks to see how sexual activity influenced pain.
The data revealed that about one-third of patients had engaged in sexual activity when they had a migraine or cluster headache. 60% of migraine sufferers experienced relief with sex with most of them noting moderate to complete pain relief.
Researchers felt that those who experienced great relief released the most endorphins in relation to their personal experience. However, if you are looking for relief, keep in mind that cuddling probably won’t do the trick and is often not appreciated by someone with a headache.
Natural Headache Relief
If sex truly is the last thing on your mind, try some of these alternative ways to relieve your pain.
Magnesium: Many people are lacking in magnesium and suffer from frequent migraines as a result. Take only amino acid- chelated magnesium, in addition to your multi vitamin and try to increase the amount of dark green vegetables, seeds and nuts in your diet.
Ginger Tea: Ginger is a known anti-inflammatory. Crush up some ginger root and add it to boiling water. This tea will ease the inflammation associated with your headache in the same amount of time that it would take aspirin to work.
Feverfew: Data released from clinical trials supports the use of feverfew, a member of the sunflower family, for treating migraines. This herb reduces inflammation which takes the pressure off of the nerves that cause the pain associated with the migraine.
Gluten-free: Going gluten-free can be a cure for migraines for some people. If you are currently not gluten-free, consider this alternative. Migraines can be a symptom of a dietary problem.
