“B” Smart – Reduce Inflammation, Bowel and Cognitive Issues with B Vitamins

Recent research published in the Journal of Nutrition shows that low levels of B vitamins in blood plasma is linked to systemic inflammation, cardiovascular disease and cognitive decline, including depression. Eating a diet high in green leafy vegetables, seeds and nuts can help fight these conditions and improve your overall health and well being.

Vitamins B6 and B12 Essential

Vitamins B6 and B12 are found in green leafy vegetables, such as kale and spinach. These vitamins are also found in seeds and nuts and are vital for healthy functioning. Studies conducted by the United States Department of Agriculture Human Nutrition Health Research Center at Tufts University discovered that individuals who test low for vitamins B6 and B12 have higher levels of systemic inflammation. Examples of illnesses characterized by systemic inflammation include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, diabetes and inflammatory bowel disease. Inflammation is an immune response and B vitamins help the body fight off conditions that create inflammation. High levels of inflammation are also a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

Researchers also assessed cognitive function and depression levels for individuals with low vitamin B levels and discovered that they were also at risk for these conditions. They found that low vitamin B12 levels are associated with poor mental status and compromised cognitive abilities, while low B6 levels are associated with increased risk for depression.

Eating a well-balanced diet that includes organically grown whole foods is important for overall health. Avoiding processed foods and consuming adequate amounts of foods high in B vitamins can prevent a wide range of debilitating and chronic health conditions.
