Researchers in Spain and Italy are excited to announce preliminary research that indicates strawberries contain chemicals that may protect humans from the damaging effects of exposure to ultraviolet rays of the sun.
Researchers have known for some time that strawberries contain bioflavonoids which have strong anti-inflammatory qualities. Additionally, antioxidant properties of strawberries make them excellent foods in protecting against cancer and improving overall health. Strawberries also are known for compounds that fight tumor development.
Researchers can now add sun protective qualities to the list of benefits from these red berries. Strawberries contain anthocyanin compounds, which modulate the effects of ultraviolet rays on human skin. In experiments, researchers tested different amounts of strawberry fruit on skin cultures and exposed them to ultraviolet rays. Test samples at with the largest amount of fruit appeared to decrease damage to cell DNA and preserve cell survival compared to control samples.
For individuals concerned with chemicals found in sun block products, research on the viability of strawberries is an exciting prospect. Although the research is in the early stages, the prospect of natural compounds as an effective tool in developing products to fight the development of skin cancer is good news for the future.
Dermatologists warn against exposure to ultraviolet rays for people at risk of developing skin cancer. Melanoma is one of the most common forms of cancer and doctors suggest using a sun block and sun screen for anyone spending time outside. However, most of these products contain harmful chemicals and absorption of body toxins are of concern to many consumers.
If you need to spend time outside, avoid periods of the day when sunlight is the strongest, from approximately 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Also, wear long sleeves, hats and sunglasses to protect your skin from damaging rays of the sun.
