5 Steps to Creating a Relaxing Home Spa

Most of us are so busy that we don’t make time for self-care, but it’s really essential for good health and well-being as a little pampering can go a long way when it comes to reducing stress. Too much stress, as you probably know, can weaken the immune system, lead to weight gain, and even increase the risk of all types of chronic illness and disease.

Following these steps to create our own relaxing home spa experience can help to melt away that stress, leaving you feeling more relaxed while also leading to better health.

Set the atmosphere

One of the keys to creating an at-home spa experience is creating a relaxing atmosphere. Dim the lights, light scented candles (lavender is known for its relaxing aromatherapy benefits), and put on some soothing tunes.

Be sure to block out all distractions like your smartphone, computer or anything else that might prevent you from forgetting about your worries and the outside world in general.

Create a calming bath

Add relaxing essential oils as the water is running. Some of the best for relaxation include lavender, chamomile, bergamot, frankincense, rose and sandalwood. Avoid artificial perfumes and fragrances as they can be toxic, causing irritation. In addition, they do not provide the same relaxing qualities as essential oils.

Turn your bath into a calm, relaxing place by supporting your head with a bath pillow, closing your eyes, inhaling deeply and focusing on your breathing. Allow the oils to produce a calming effect while blocking out worrying thoughts.

Massage

When you’re finished with your bath, step out and wrap up in a fluffy, warm towel and apply a non-toxic lotion or coconut oil all over your skin. Massage it gently into your hands, feet, back, temples, and any other areas that might be especially tense. By using your thumbs and rubbing in small circles you’ll almost feel as if you’ve had a whole-body massage.

Nourish yourself

Now that you’re nice and relaxed, add to that feeling by sipping a cup of chamomile tea or a refreshing glass of water with a squeeze of lemon. Avoid eating junk foods like processed food, fast food or anything heavy. Munching on a bowl of fresh organic fruits and veggies can make you feel as good on the inside as you do on the outside!

Revel in more “me” time

Now is the time to enjoy some of your favorite relaxing activities, but avoid watching TV or browsing the web. You might go outside and get some fresh air, take a walk and enjoy the scenery, meditate, read a book, or even take a nap. The most important thing to remember is to keep high-tech gadgets off, shut off your busy mind and give yourself plenty of TLC.

You might be amazed at how positively transforming enjoying your own relaxing “spa day” at home can be!
