5 Foods To Help Beat The Cold And Flu Before Christmas

It’s that time of year again. The cold weather, family get-togethers and lots of Christmas traffic are finally upon us. Some love this season, like me, while others can’t wait for it to finally be January 2018.

No matter how you feel about this season, can we all agree that the holidays are far worse when we are battling a cold or flu virus? Actually, as you might already know, a bad cold is more common to occur around this time of year. People should take their illnesses seriously to beat it as soon as possible, and the last thing you want to do is spread it to those you love. Shockingly, an estimated 250,000 to 500,000 people die of flu-related deaths each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Knowing this, why not try and change your diet to maximize the healing process and to avoid the illness spreading? If you really want to beat that pesky bug with only a few days left before Christmas, it’s time to incorporate these foods into your diet as soon as possible!

1. Onion

Onions, as you probably already know, have compounds that truly benefit our bodies. Raw onions, in particular, are a great remedy for a cough from the cold and flu. Historically, Native Americans recognized the power of the onion and have used it to treat the flu for generations. It is especially powerful for helping congestion, bronchitis and respiratory infections.

2. Garlic

Garlic is another wise natural option to treat the cold and flu. Garlic is loaded with anti-viral and antiseptic properties that boost your body when battling the common cold. Garlic has been found to help lower blood pressure and is amazing for our blood pressure. Take a spoonful of raw chopped up garlic and it will provide fast decongestant relief.

3. Honey

If you have a very strong cough, honey is an amazing option to provide relief. Honey is truly a miracle for sore throats. All you need is a spoonful, then let it drizzle down your throat to get a soothing effect. Also, our immune systems benefit greatly from the antimicrobial activities, making it a great option to battle the flu.

4. Coconut oil

Along with honey, coconut oil is great for boosting the immune system. It has amazing anti-microbial attributes and can easily be included in daily meals.

5. Ginger

Ginger is prized for its antimicrobial attributes. It is also widely known for its anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties. It also is amazing for our gastrointestinal tract, making it a delicious option for those battling lingering flu symptoms. The best way to consume it is in your tea.
