5 Energy Busters and How to Avoid Them: Part Two

In the last article, we covered the first three of five energy drainers. They included unhealthy, “fast foods” that give you a quick burst then leave you sluggish. Overusing technology and never taking a break was the second energy buster, and the antidote is taking 30 to 60 minute quiet breaks from your devices. The third area is associating with negative, energy-draining people. Simply replace your time with these types of people with supportive, encouraging friends, family and peers.

The fourth energy drainer is negative self-talk or what most of us call, “beating yourself up”. We all do it. The key to overcoming this debilitating habit is to first become aware of it. When you think or speak something pessimistic about your appearance, performance or overall abilities, how does it affect your energy levels? For most men and women, it creates sadness, feeling “down”, depression, anxiety, and even a lack of motivation. Plus, your thoughts and words are not serving you, even if they may be true on some level.

The next time you find yourself thinking or saying something “self-bashing”, become instantly aware of it and change your language. Acknowledge the truth of it (ie. maybe you did screw up the last meeting you had), and then move on. Think and say something constructive and powerful. Even if this new thought or statement doesn’t feel true, it will ultimately move you to action. Most of us achieve more when we are driven by inspiration and hard-core motivation, than by feelings of worthlessness. Raise your awareness of what you’re constantly thinking and saying, accept its level of truth, and then create a new thought or statement. This will energize and move you to act.

The final energy drainer is simple. Lacking quality sleep in your life will not only drain your energy levels over time, it will compromise creative energy, immunity and your overall health. You don’t just need hyped-up energy to have a good life; you need real energy. The kind that comes from being and feeling healthy and having the stamina and creativity to accomplish more than you thought possible. There are times when you’ve had energy from caffeine or other stimulants but could not focus on the task at hand. Good, quality sleep will give you both the long-term energy and the clarity and focus you need to be successful.

In the evenings, turn off all electronic devices a couple of hours before going to sleep (this includes the television). Sip some warm, herbal tea or take a hot shower if you need some relaxation. Make sure the air conditioning is turned to a cool temperature and you’re sleeping in a dark, comfortable space. Try to go to bed at the same time every night and wake around the same time, even on the weekends. You will ultimately train your body to get the rest it needs and have the energy to conquer and enjoy each day.

With these final two energy busters, take notice of when you’re putting yourself down with thoughts or words and change it immediately. Get to sleep at a decent hour and create a comfortable haven. When you make these changes, not only will you have more energy and motivation, you will feel enthused about life in general. And at this level, you will truly be living.
