Some days, we find ourselves so productive that we start to think we are superhuman! Other days, not so much. We’ve all had those, scattered, unfocused days where it seems that no matter how hard we try to buckle down, our minds are all over the place.
The following are 10 ways to get focused when the going gets rough.
Make a list of goals. If a task seems daunting, it may help to write a list of what accomplishing it will mean. Will it get you closer to a promotion? Will you finally be able to relax in your home once it’s organized? Will you finally have some free time? Focusing on the outcomes of your hard work can make it easier, and even more exciting, to complete.
Satisfy your hunger. It’s nearly impossible to focus if you’re hungry. Healthy daily nutrition starts with a good breakfast – don’t skip it! Make sure your meals contain plenty of fresh, organic fruits and veggies, healthy proteins and fats and good carbs to keep you satiated and full of energy.
Get some exercise before you start your task. You’ll get a rush of endorphins, and enough focus and energy to fuel you from start to finish.
Clear the clutter. It can be nearly impossible to focus on one task if your desk is a swarm of papers and reminder notes. Take some time to get rid of clutter and organize your space – when your workspace is focused, you will be more focused, too.
Meditate. Meditation is a great way to quiet your mind, get rid of distractions, and focus on the present. Meditating for just 10 minutes before you begin a task can prime you for success. If you’re struggling during your work, take 5 or 10 minutes for some quiet meditation, then tackle it again.
Set up a reward for yourself. If you’re having a hard time working on a project, set yourself a time limit to work, and decide that if you work diligently for that entire time, you can take a break and see a movie, or just relax and read a book.
Create a support network. If you’re embarking on a long-term goal, such as weight loss, for example, enlisting family and friends for support is a great idea. That way, everyone can help keep each other on track if someone starts to lose focus.
Go outside. Weather permitting, some fresh air and sunshine can reset your mind if you find yourself distracted and frustrated. Taking a break to get outside can help you return to your task way more focused.
Have a cup of coffee. Not only does coffee provide energy, the caffeine that it contains has also been linked to improved mood, memory and reaction time, as well as improved overall cognitive function. Not a coffee fan? Brew a delicious cup of black or green tea.
Now, get to work!
