Time flies way too fast, and because of this, we all need to make the most of our time with our families. Before you know it, the kids will be out the door, starting careers or families of their own.
This is why it is especially important to be close with one another – even if the kids go off on their own, they will always know that they can count on you to be there for them.
The following are eight simple ways to encourage family togetherness.
Game night. Make Friday night game night. Playing games together will relieve stress after a long hectic week of work and school.
Family dinner. This is a time where the family can get together and talk about what has happened during the day. It’s an important time to share with each other and to know what is going on in each other’s lives.
Share in the cooking. When you’re planning a dinner, have everyone contribute. Maybe each person could make a dish, or perhaps someone sets the table while someone else cooks. Whatever the task may be, have everyone involved in the process.
Support each other. Whether it’s a baseball game or a ballet recital, it’s important for everyone to be there. By showing your support, you’re showing your love.
Watch what you say. If you lash out in anger, be sure to apologize the first chance you get. Holding grudges can be hurtful to a family. Also, be an encourager, not a discourager. Hurtful words and sarcasm have long lasting effects on a person. This too can hurt your family closeness.
Show affection. Touch is such a powerful display of affection. It sends messages of love to your family, and creates a bond of closeness.
Family vacations. While spending time together away from home, you will likely make some memories you will never forget. Additionally, experiencing new activities will help naturally draw you together.
Chip in around the house. If everyone pitches in to help with the chores, there will be more time to spend together as a family, and everyone will feel a sense that they are needed.
Families are often stressed from working too hard and trying to get all the pieces to fit. There is so much competition for family time: social media, TV, video games, and friends all try and grab your attention and your precious hours. It’s a chore to find any family time.
However, with a little ingenuity and persistence, it is possible to have quality family time. Be patient and take it one day at a time. It will be worth it in the end.
